Commonsense wins out over Red Fleet

It could be a case of ‘I told you so’ for the Bourke, Brewarrina and Walgett Shire Councils with a win over the contentious issue of ownership of the Rural Fire Service Red Fleet.
On Friday, the NSW government announced it would take ownership of the fleet of 6000 vehicles throughout the state, saying it would enable the RFS to better manage and modernise the vehicles.
For these shire councils the official announcement of the ownership means they can close off what has been an administrative nuisance. Bourke Shire Council was one of a handful of councils which argued it didn’t own the vehicles and therefore they shouldn’t be listed as assets on Council’s books.
“Council has never seen the Red Fleet as belonging to Council, but unfortunately, the state government didn’t agree to that until these changes,” General Manager Leonie Brown said.
“We appreciate that the government will now take them off Council’s books and for us, it clears up an issue regarding our financial statements. […]
