Coming back to Bourke at Easter has an added attraction this year, with past and present Bourke Hospital staff invited to a reunion.

Coinciding with the 10th Back O’Bourke Easter Festival when former locals flock back to town, Pat Canty, Manager of Regional Partnerships and Community Engagement at Bourke Hospital said there is a staff reunion planned.

“We thought the timing was perfect,” Ms Canty said. “Over the years, we’ve had nursing reunions, but now we’re trying to coordinate one for the whole staff.”

Ms Canty completed her enrolled nurse training in Bourke and followed up with her registered nursing training at Bathurst. She then returned to Bourke and focussed on Aboriginal Health.

“A big part of this idea is honouring First Nations staff who are or have been part of our hospital,” she said.

“Hospitals are a good work base for Aboriginal people and Bourke is no different. The idea came through my colleagues Stephen Howarth and Robyn Martin, who both did their nursing training as enrolled nurses in Bourke. Robyn and I remained in health, and Stephen is in Aboriginal Affairs that also has an impact in health.

“As far as the reunion goes, there’s no limit to how long ago you worked at the hospital, and it can be within the many disciplines from nursing, primary health and mental health to environmental services.” […]
