As livestock producers grapple with worsening seasonal conditions, cattle are increasingly being moved into western New South Wales – and Bourke vet Dr Charlotte Cavanagh says local producers have a valuable opportunity, provided they’re prepared.
Based at Kidman Way Vet Clinic, Dr Cavanagh said the recent influx of cattle into the region was a promising sign that the district has some good feed available.
“It’s a great opportunity to help out southern producers, whether it’s through agistment or by purchasing cattle to breed, trade, or turn off,” Dr Cavanagh said.
She also cautioned that what may seem like a bargain could quickly become a burden without proper planning.
To help smooth the process for producers, particularly those not familiar with trading or inducting cattle, Dr Cavanagh has compiled a list of 10 top tips for purchasing and bringing new stock onto local properties.
“It’s not onerous, but it’s important to be aware of the risks and responsibilities,” she said.
