Call for Natural Disaster declaration in Walgett Shire

The Mayor of Walgett Shire Jasen Ramien has called on the State Government to seek a natural disaster declaration after Walgett Shire was hit by a freak storm.

The village of Carinda was worst hit on Sunday evening, with power lines down, roofs off houses and damage to business premises.

At least 12 properties are severely damage and uninhabitable and power and telephone services were out on Monday.

“Our region has been rattled by this storm, with extensive damage to a number of properties, and the roof torn off the local pub, pizza shop and general store in Carinda,” Councillor Ramien said.

“The natural disaster declaration will allow us to make the decisions we need to begin our recovery, knowing we have the necessary support.” […]
