Butler calls for Carinda assistance
The Member for Barwon Roy Butler has called on the NSW government to provide the same financial assistance package to Carinda residents that was put in place in Broken Hill and other far west communities after recent long term power outages.
Mr Butler said that Carinda’s situation was very different than the circumstances at Broken Hill.
“In Carinda, there is a network of power, whereas Broken Hill has a single supply line and the two generators, but the outcome is very similar, in that people went around 48 hours without power,” Mr Butler said.
“I understand that my request has progressed but unfortunately, these things never go as fast as we’d like them to.”
Mr Butler said that there should be some assistance available, certainly for damaged council infrastructure.
“The real challenge is that there’s a lot of people around Carinda who are either uninsured or underinsured, so the damage that’s occurred to their dwelling or to their business is something that we’re going to have to work out,” Mr Butler said.
“How do we get to repair roofs and houses? There’s no easy answer for that. I will continue to work with the government ministers, particularly Emergency Services Minister Jihad Dib and the Premier to see if we can come up with something to ensure people can get back in their homes.”
