Brewarrina youth leaders make their mark

The strength, pride and potential of Brewarrina’s next generation was on full display in Sydney, according to Brewarrina Shire Council General Manager David Kirby, following a leadership trip that culminated in the young people meeting Prime Minister Anthony Albanese at Kirribilli House.
Mr Kirby, who accompanied the group and serves as a non-executive director of the Winmarra Foundation, said the experience demonstrated exactly what young country people could achieve when given the opportunity.
“Meeting the Prime Minister alongside the young people from Brewarrina and the Winmarra Foundation was an experience that truly showcased the strength and potential of our community,” Mr Kirby said.
“These emerging leaders carry culture, resilience and pride with them wherever they go, and watching them speak so confidently about their aspirations was extraordinary.
“Opportunities like this are rare for kids from rural Australia, yet when given the chance, they stepped up and made our community proud. They demonstrated exactly what makes Brewarrina’s young people so remarkable, and they showed why continued investment in young rural people matters.”
Accompanied by local adults including youth mentor Matthew Simpson and Mr Kirby, the Brewarrina students travelled to Sydney as part of the Winmarra Foundation’s Emerging Leaders Program, an experiences designed to build confidence, strengthen leadership skills and reinforce connection to culture and community.
Mr Kirby said Brewarrina Shire Council was proud to support the Foundation and the opportunities it was creating for local young people.
“Council is proud to support the Winmarra Foundation and the impact they are making. Their programs are building confidence, strengthening cultural identity and creating pathways that many of our young people would not otherwise have access to,” he said. […]
