One of the stars of the recent Western Division conference in Cobar was Brewarrina Shire, which drew high praise from Minister for Local Government, Ron Hoenig.

The Minister singled out Brewarrina for its approach to governance in the community and its innovative employment strategies and said as a result, the Shire did not face the same challenges as other communities in the Far West.

“I had the pleasure of spending time with the Mayor and General Manager of Brewarrina Shire as part of the Western Division of Councils Conference,” Minister Hoenig said.

“I was impressed by how the council has created employment opportunities for their local community and pathways for young people to start working on the council while still in high school.

“Over three quarters of the Bre council workforce are Aboriginal, which is a credit to the sense of community and local pride that exists in Brewarrina.

“Brewarrina Shire Council is living proof of the importance of the local government sector in doing more than just providing roads and rubbish services.

“The leadership and community cohesion the council provides is a key reason Brewarrina isn’t facing the same social and economic challenges impacting several surrounding communities in the far west.

“They are a shining example of the positive impact local councils can have in regional communities and I hope they are just as proud as I am of the community-focused organisation they are leading.

“I very much look forward to visiting the shire soon and learning more about this shining example of local government,” Mr Hoenig said.
