Youngsters from Brewarrina and Bourke enjoyed a day of rugby league on Saturday, with a top ranked development officer on hand to give some expert advice – and make sure everyone on the paddock had fun.
The day was organised by the Barwon Darling Rugby League club to give local children a taste of rugby league and a chance to enjoy skills and competition with their friends.
BDRL club organiser Poi Birtles said it was an great opportunity for youngsters to have fun and get a taste for rugby league.
“It was an awesome day for Brewarrina children with a warm-up, some tackle training and then some games,” she said.
“We were lucky to have NRL lead development officer Dave Elvy who drives the Penrith Panthers program, out in the regional areas to promote unity and connection.
“Dave handed out Penrith Panther guernseys to all the kids.
“It was a bonus that we were able to bring the children together for some fun,” she said.
The BDRL club made sure every child who wanted to attend the gala day in Bre could get there, with transport organised for youngsters in Bourke Goodooga, Collarenbri, Walgett and Lightning Ridge.
Children in Bre and other communities in the BDRL catchment area will also have transport provided to get them to Bourke on Saturday.
The gala is aimed at children 5-12 years old and this Saturday will be at Davidson Oval from 10am.
