Bre honours former Mayor on Australia Day
Brewarrina’s Citizen of the Year was Phil ‘Ocker’ O’Connor, the former Mayor who retired at the last local government elections.
Ocker was born and bred in the Brewarrina Shire, and Brewarrina is his second greatest passion in life.
At the Bre Australia Day Ceremony, he was described as a generous man, honest, loyal and willing to go out of his way to help anyone in need. He has a passion for the community and puts in 110% to everything his involved with.
He did his mechanical apprenticeship in Bourke and returning to Brewarrina, he started a mechanical business to services the local community.
New Brewarrina Mayor, Councillor Vivian Slack Smith, said that Mr O’Connor loves his community and the people who live here with a passion.
“His terms on council, both as a councillor and mayor, have been incredibly successful,” she said.
“He has supported and sponsored many local sporting events and community groups, provided a bus for the local cricket club, was president of the fishing club, and on more than one occasion, Ocker has reached into his own pocket to help out someone in need”. {…}
