The Brewarrina Golden Googars have broken a 7-year drought to defeat minor premiers – the Bourke Warriors in a tense 18-14 grand final at Walgett on Sunday afternoon.

After leading 10-2 at half time, the Brewarrina boys surged to victory scoring four tries to two against a strong Bourke Warriors outfit.

The winning margin could have been much more if Googars goal kicker Hudson Boney-Higgins had been more accurate on the day.

Hudson – who is normally accurate – even without a kicking tee –kicked only one conversion from four attempts, compared with two conversions and a penalty goal kicked by Bourke’s Shimar Dennis.

The Warriors were unlucky to have a try disallowed just before halftime, but the Brewarrina players stuck to their game plan to win an unlikely premiership.

The Warriors were without explosive forward Sam Canty but still boasted a lot of experience up front with players like Patrick Edwards, Lachlan Budd, Colin Lang and Joel Bates.

Brewarrina supporters ran onto the field to congratulate their players as the final hooter blew, and Googars President Sharon Fox said she was hoarse from cheering the Googars on to victory.

“Brewarrina people are passionate about their footy and the last time we won a grand final was 2017,” Sharon said.

“We all ran on to congratulate the boys and there was lots of laughing and crying and shaking hands and hugging – it was a fantastic feeling.”

“And to win a grand final against the minor premiers from Bourke was something special for us.

“Bourke went into the grand final as minor premiers and favourites, but in the end the Googars came out on top,” Sharon said.

Bourke Warriors president George Orcher said that he and the Bourke players were gutted by the loss which he said was unexpected. […]
