The rising costs being faced by communities across the country have blown a cold wind through Brewarrina, with the popular Bre Blizzard postponed.

Brewarrina Shire Council has made the difficult decision not to run the Blizzard these school holidays, citing economics, rising fuel costs and logistics.

The impact of those higher costs meant there was uncertainty about delivering the event, which in previous years has been a huge success for Brewarrina Council and the Brewarrina community, and a popular attraction during the school holidays.

“Unfortunately, our event has not been immune,” Brewarrina Shire Council General Manager David Kirby said.

“Despite extensive efforts, Council has been unable to secure the level of funding needed to meet these increased costs and deliver the event our community expects and deserves.

“At the same time, a noticeable decline in regional travel due to the current fuel crisis means we are not expecting the usual level of visitor movement through the region, adding further pressure to the event’s financial viability. […]
