Bourke runner takes on world stage in Sydney

Bourke Hospital pathology laboratory manager Liam Tegg has swapped blood tests for running shoes, completing one of the world’s major marathons in under four hours.

Liam represented Bourke at the Sydney Marathon on Sunday 30 August, completing the 42.2-kilometre course in three hours and 57 minutes.

For Liam, simply securing a place on the start line was an achievement.

The Sydney Marathon is one of the Abbott World Marathon Majors, along with events including Boston, London, Berlin, Chicago, New York and Tokyo. While elite runners can qualify through their times, Liam entered a ballot 12 months before the event and was fortunate enough to secure a place.

“It quite hard to get into, and I was lucky enough to draw a place in the ballot,” Liam said. “It’s pretty unique, and I feel very privileged to participate.”

Crossing the finish line in 3:57 made the experience even sweeter.

“I’m super happy with the result, and I’m super happy that I finished the course and experienced the Sydney Marathon,” he said.

Liam is no stranger to Bourke, having previously worked locally collecting blood about eight years ago. […]
