Bourke placement inspires future doctor

Bourke Shire Council recently voted to continue their support of the Rural Doctor’s Network Bush Bursary program, which provides funding for a two-week placement of a student doctor in town.

These annual placements are coordinated by participating councils in collaboration with Rural Doctor’s Network, and last November, medical student Hannah George spent her placement in Bourke, describing the experience as “transformative.”

“My two-week bush bursary experience, to put it short, was both eye-opening and life-changing,” Ms George said.

“I left Bourke thinking I might be headed for a career in a rural and remote area than I had at first thought.”

During her time at the Bourke Community Health Centre, Ms George was immersed in a wide array of services—from the sexual health clinic, working with the outreach midwife and diabetes clinics, to podiatry, and even mobile services like the CT truck and the Royal Flying Doctor Service. […]
