Bourke pauses to remember fallen police

Police, community members and clergy gathered at Bourke’s Holy Spirit Church on Tuesday to honour officers who have lost their lives in the course of their service.

The Bourke service was held as part of National Police Remembrance Day, observed annually on September 29. The day has been observed since 1989 and coincides with the feast day of Saint Michael the Archangel, traditionally regarded as the patron saint of police.

Central North Police District Commander Superintendent Gerard Lawson described the occasion as one of the most significant days on the policing calendar.

“It’s a very, very solemn day, and it’s important to remember that it’s not just about Bourke or Central North, although we have lost police in their service here in our town,” Superintendent Lawson said. […‘
