Bourke ‘freedom camping’ site goes ahead

Bourke Shire Council is progressing with upgrades to its designated freedom camping area on Polygonum Swamp Road near North Bourke, with initial works now complete and further improvements planned in the coming weeks.

General Manager Leonie Brown said works had focused on building the camping area alongside the road, with an extension still to be completed.

“There’s still a bit more work to go. We’ve got the first stage done and there’ll be another stage in the next couple of weeks,” Mrs Brown said. “We’ve got about another 30 metres to go of the extension.”

“After that we need to put our signage up and get our delineation and road markings done to identify it as a pullover area,” she said.

Mrs Brown emphasised the site will operate under strict conditions and is intended for fully self-contained vehicles only. […]
