Bourke cruelty ignites push for tougher animal welfare laws

Animal cruelty charges laid following an alleged illegal hunting incident north of Bourke have sharpened the NSW government’s focus on strengthening animal welfare laws across the state.

Earlier this year, police charged multiple men under Strike Force Salwood following an investigation into alleged animal cruelty offences on rural properties along Lower Lila Road, Lower Lila, about 80 kilometres north of Bourke.

It is alleged that between Sunday, 7 September and Monday 8 September 2025, two sheep and 16 goats were shot across several properties in the area.

The investigation began on Monday 8 September 2025, when officers from the Central North Police District and the Rural Crime Prevention Team established Strike Force Salwood to investigate reports of alleged illegal hunting in the Far West.

A 22-year-old man was charged after several electronic devices were seized at a home in Hamlyn Terrace on the NSW Central Coast on Tuesday 16 December 2025. He remains before the court. […]
