Bourke families were treated to a day of entertainment, activities, health advice and valuable information when Bourke and District Children’s Services (BDCS) hosted its Baby Expo last Thursday.

The event brought together a wide range of health professionals, community organisations and family support services, giving parents and expectant parents an opportunity to discover the assistance available in Bourke and beyond.

Bourke and District Children’s Services representative Belinda Cunningham said the expo was designed to connect families with services supporting children from pregnancy through to their early years.

“We wanted to help people to see what’s in town to support them while they’re pregnant, having their babies and also during early education,” Ms Cunningham said.

“It’s really important for people to know that these services are here in town for them to access.”

Among the organisations represented were Macquarie Homestay, the Outback Division of General Practice, CatholicCare, Bourke Community Health, the Australian Breastfeeding Association, Deadly Dads, the Bourke Library and Maranguka.

Families could speak with a speech pathologist, access antenatal and immunisation information, learn about breastfeeding support and receive practical advice on keeping babies healthy.

The Expo also highlighted services available outside Bourke, including Macquarie Home Stay in Dubbo, which provides accommodation support for mothers travelling to Dubbo to give birth and others travelling for medical treatment.[…]
