Bonnie is running for better health
Bourke runner Verhonda Smith, aka Bonnie Smith, is only a fortnight away from running the half marathon on the Gold Coast.
But rather than this being the culmination of a dream, Bonnie’s Gold Coast run is just another step in her training program, in preparation for the Moonlight Marathon in Alice Springs in October this year.
Bonnie is one of fourteen participants in the Indigenous Marathon Project (IMP) which is in its twelfth year.
Each year the IMP selects applicants from around the country to join the six-month training program that climaxes in running the marathon.
Pre-COVID, the trainees completed the marathon in New York, but with COVID restrictions in place, the IMP created the Moonlight Marathon in Alice Springs.
As the Health Promotions Officer for BACHS, Bonnie is already aware of the need to promote healthy lifestyle choices in the community.
