Big Dollars for Big Projects

Plenty of money has been earmarked for  projects across the Outback, and the financial windfall can only mean good things for the region.

Development work underway across our region includes the new Bourke Aboriginal Corporation Heath Service which has just received a further $5.3 million in funding to get the new clinic underway (see story on page 5).

Previously stalled due to budget blow-outs during COVID, Bourke Aboriginal Health Service CEO John ]


said he is ‘very excited’ that the building could now go ahead.

Also in Bourke, the $60 million expansion of the Thomas Foods abattoir will allow the facility to process up to 6,000 goats per day and add new cold storage and freezer facilities, providing more employment opportunities for the region.

Bourke’s targeted pre-school funding of $4.8 million looks to be unlocked, with sentiment being to direct funding to the existing facility, rather than build a new one. And the NSW Budget has earmarked additional funding to refurbish the PCYC buildings at Walgett and Bourke.

On top of this, plans for the $13.3 million rebuild of Bourke Police Station are progressing.

In Brewarrina, excitement is still high after the Federal government allocated $10 million to build a new PCYC Youth Hub & Indoor Sports Centre, including a gymnasium, basketball and netball courts, boxing facilities and community space. […]
