Big cotton crop being planted

Cotton planting is underway across Australia including at farms along the Barwon-Darling at Bourke, Brewarrina and Walgett.

Up to 9,000 hectares of cotton will be planted around Bourke and Brewarrina this season, while Walgett district growers are expected to plant 8,000ha of irrigated cotton and up to 8,000ha dryland crop.

At Bourke, cotton grower Tony Thompson from Afterhours Ag has planted  370 hectares of cotton on his Prattenville property and is now planting another 350 hectares on his ‘Wirricanna’ farm near Brewarrina.

“We are currently watering up our planted crop on Prattenville and expect to have the Wirricanna fields all planted during October,” Mr Thompson said.

“Recent wet weather has brought consistent flows down the Barwon-Darling River which means we have adequate water in storage to get our crops through the summer growing period. […]
