Barbarians chalk up early victory over Nyngan

In a hard fought first round match at Brewarrina’s Geoff New Oval on Saturday the Bre-Bourke Barbarians edged out Nyngan’s Bogan Bulls by 18 points to 12.

After a tough opening exchange, the Bogan Bulls had a long period of possession in the Barbarians’ red zone, and finally crossed through Craig Ticehurst.

Bulls’ number 7 Bailey Booth failed to convert and Nyngan took an early 5-0 lead.

The game then ebbed and flowed until 12 minutes before half-time when the Barbarians kicked down the far touch line, re-gathered the ball and Bailey Desmond, backing up, scored under the posts, to even the scoreline.

Bailey then converted his own try and the Barbarians led by 7-5.

The Bogan Bulls were under pressure with a few minutes to from halftime when Barbarians captain Rory Finlayson went within a few inches of the tryline before spilling the ball – a lucky let-off for the visitors. {…]
