Baiame’s Ngunnhu celebration on the Barwon River

The Brewarrina community was immersed in First Nations culture over the weekend, with Baiame’s Ngunnhu celebration drawing big crowds over three days of dance, art, music, and friendship.

Coordinator, Lily Shearer, said the event saw clans from across the region come together to share their connection to the river in a spirit of collaboration and community.

“The festival started on Friday with a corroboree, which was fantastic to witness,” Lily said.

“We held dance and language residencies a few weeks ago over four days in preparation for the corroboree and you could see that collaboration and exchange in the performance and how they created a community through the dances.

“The crowd on the first night was more than 200 and everyone was very receptive, they loved it,” she said.

The Saturday events were hosted by the Brewarrina Local Aboriginal Land Council and included markets and food, with the fashion parade getting an enthusiastic reception.

“The parade was part of Outback Fashion Month run by Signal Creative through Outback Arts and everyone loved what they saw,” Lily said.

“Tom Barker held wood carving workshops and gave talks, Tracy Walford ran a weaving workshop, and the art workshops were run by Dennis Golding who is the Artist-in-Residence at the NSW Art Gallery and Karen Boney, one of our talented local artists. […]
