Australia Day Award for Cheryl Massey of Brewarrina
A planned Australia Day Eve cricket matchup at Bre’s Geoff New Oval was scuttled last Thursday due to extreme heat.
Rather than chasing a leather ball around the oval in 40-degree heat, the fun lovers headed to the town pool for fun and games in the water.
The Australia Day ceremony on Friday was held in the air-conditioned comfort of the Brewarrina Visitor Information Centre, and hosted by Brewarrina’s Australia Day Ambassador and hometown hero, jockey Ronald Simpson.
According to Brewarrina Shire Mayor, Councillor Vivian Slack-Smith, “Ronnie was very happy to be back on the river and gave a little talk about how he got to be where he is now.”
Cr Slack-Smith said Ronnie’s achievements were amazing.
“It’s so heartwarming to see someone from our area, racing with the big boys,” she said.
With Ronnie’s upbringing in Brewarrina and chalking-up nearly 100 race victories, Ronald was also recognized as Brewarrina’s Sportsperson of the Year.
According to Cr Slack-Smith, “All the nominations for that award were for Ronnie, and rightly so.” […]
