Anzac day at Lightning Ridge — Schembri’s Last Post inspires next generation

At just 27, Lightning Ridge Central School’s music teacher Lucas Schembri helped coordinate one of the town’s most significant annual events — the Anzac Day Dawn Service — but insists the focus remains firmly on those who served.
“I wouldn’t try to give me such a massive title regarding coordinating the service,” Mr Schembri said.
“It’s not about me. It’s about ensuring that all the veterans and people who have served Australia and New Zealand are remembered respectfully.”
Mr Schembri has attended Anzac services since he was a child, with strong family ties to military service shaping his connection to the day.
“My grandfather’s a Vietnam vet, my uncle served in Papua New Guinea and Borneo, and others in my family have served as well,” he said. “It’s something I hold very close.” […]
