Airline crisis looming for western NSW

A delegation from Bourke and Cobar Shire Councils visited Parliament House in Sydney last week, seeking assurances that the Far West will continue to be supported by airline passenger flights.

Led by Bourke Mayor Barry Hollman and Cobar Mayor Jarrod Marsden, the delegation also included General Managers from Bourke and Cobar – Leonie Brown and Peter Vlatko.

The recent announcement that Rex Airlines has gone into administration, grounding its Boeing 737 fleet on major metropolitan routes, has added to concerns about air travel to rural areas.

Currently, there is no guarantee of government funding to continue air travel to Bourke, Cobar, Lightning Ridge and Walgett beyond October. […]
