A Cardinal visits the real Outback

Australia’s only Cardinal, Mykola Bychok, visited the Bourke district during January as part of a pastoral visit alongside Columba Macbeth-Green, Bishop of the Wilcannia–Forbes Diocese.
At just 45, Cardinal Mykola is the youngest Cardinal in the world and was included in the Cardinals’ conclave for the selection of Pope Leo in May last year.
Originally from the Ukrainian Catholic Church, Cardinal Mykola travelled through Bourke, the Wanaaring district and Louth, before celebrating Mass at Louth, followed by a meal at the town’s iconic Shindy’s Inn.
Speaking at a dinner at the Port of Bourke Hotel, Cardinal Mykola said being present in remote communities was central to his calling.
“The main reason we are here is to be close to people, close to reality, close to Bishop Columba, who is my good friend,” he said. “After the groundbreaking ceremony near Mutawintji with the Carmelite Sisters, I wanted to spend a few days visiting people, especially in remote areas. For me, this is very important.”
Cardinal Mykola said his background as a Redemptorist priest had shaped his commitment to mission and outreach.
“We proclaim Jesus Christ the Redeemer through missions, through retreats, and through our life in community,” he said. “I enjoy being close to people.” […]
