The Cenotaph in Central Park is one of Bourke’s most important locations, where every year the community pays its respects to Bourke men and women who served in the defence forces.
It is the site of Anzac Day and Remembrance Day commemorations, as well as ceremonies to honour those who served in Vietnam and to mark other significant events involving local people in theatres of war or in the service of their country.
Bourke Shire Council General Manager Ross Earl said Council had been successful in securing grant funding to upgrade the site, with plans for additional shade, a podium, paving, sandstone seating and an Anzac icon to mark the significance of the Cenotaph.
