Bourke community rallies for Mason

The Bourke community has once again shown its generosity, rallying to help the family of one of its young residents who is battling a life-threatening illness.

Nine-year-old Mason Hardy has been diagnosed with leukaemia and is currently at Westmead Children’s Hospital with his mum Nicole Hyland, receiving treatment.

Mason is a student at Bourke Public School where the P&C decided is running a fundraising campaign to help Mason and his parents meet the costs of treatment and travel.

P&C President Lisa Rankmore said Bourke had shown once again what a huge heart it has by stepping up to help the Hardy family and support local fundraising efforts.

“We decided as a committee we would lend a hand but due to COVID -19 we had to come up with a way to raise funds without having people come to the school,” Lisa said.

“So, what we’ve decided to do is a cupcake fundraiser and we’ve baked so many it’s not funny!

“I rang all the business houses, the high school and organisations like Maranguka and the response we got was unbelievable.

“We made about 200 over the weekend and had sold most of them by Monday to all the businesses and organisations around town and that was without the kids buying them on the Tuesday, so the community has been fantastic.

“We also had Troy and Louise Gordon, who are based in Sydney but used to work in Bourke, and they messaged me to donate.

“I’d also like to thank Oliver and Samantha Gordon who bought cupcakes for all their workers and gave us a donation.
