Bourke churches are gradually reopening after a 3 month lay-off forced by the state government’s COVID-19 public health orders.

Like all large public gatherings, church services and Sunday schools have been closed as part of the effort to stop the spread of the coronavirus.

But the NSW government has announced that church services – like other indoor venues – can now have unlimited numbers at services from 1 July – as long as they comply with the social distancing rule of one person seated per 4 square metres.

Restrictions have been eased for funerals immediately on compassionate grounds, and from 1 July weddings can have as many guests as the venue can hold within the four square metre rule – but where there are more than 20 guests, there will be no dance floors.

Bourke Christian Church elder Ian Cole said his church has reopened its doors and is now running regular Sunday morning services, Sunday school and some other activities.

Mr Cole said the church was taking a cautious approach to make sure that all members and visitors are protected.

“The last thing we want to see is someone catch the virus because we have too many people in one place or poor hygiene and social distancing.
