Dubbo Hospital upgrade a bonus for Bourke

Bourke residents will have access to the most advanced cancer diagnostic equipment when the new Cancer Centre at Dubbo Base Hospital gets underway next year.

Construction of the Cancer Centre will begin in early 2020 and the facilities will provide patients across the Far West with the latest diagnostic technology.

The upgrade to Dubbo Base Hospital also includes a new Renal Unit and new parking areas.

A team from the hospital visited Bourke last Thursday and held an information stall in the main street to give the community the opportunity to see the changes planned for the region’s biggest medical facility.

Health Infrastructure spokesperson Belinda Berryman said the Cancer Centre would mean Bourke patients would be able to get cancer diagnoses which could be life-saving.

“The Centre will have a PET CT scanner and a radiation therapy bunker,” Belinda said. “It means people will get their best diagnosis in Dubbo which would save them enormous amounts of travel to Sydney for the same service.

“It really is state of the art equipment and we are very fortunate to have it at Dubbo Base Hospital.”
