One of Australia’s most important women and aboriginal activists has been honoured in her home town with the opening of a park in Brewarrina.

The Essie Coffey Bush Queen Village was opened at a special ceremony on Friday, with members of the Coffey family, Council officials and local residents in attendance.

The park is located at the eastern end of the Entrance to Dodge City off the Kamilaroi Highway and will be a permanent reminder of the impact Essie had during her lifelong campaigning for the welfare of aboriginal people.
