Former Bourke High School student Allan Clarke is a Walkley Award winner, taking out a major prize at Thursday’s most prestigious media awards.

Allan was nominated for his investigation into the death of Tamworth teenager Mark Haines in 1988 and his collective work investigating unsolved crimes involving indigenous people.

His five year investigation has led to a confession, police re-opening investigations, assigning a detective to the case and a $100,000 reward being offered for information.

The story begins in Tamworth 30 years ago when a freight train hits someone lying on the tracks. When a rail worker looks at the body, the scene doesn’t seem to make sense. There is a towel under the head and hardly any blood. The shoes on the body are clean despite the mud surrounding the scene.
