Walgett Shire council rejects lowering of weirs
Walgett Shire Council has now taken a formal position on the government’s proposal to lower the local weirs – and the position is exactly the same as Bourke Shire Council – opposition to lowering of weirs and support for fishways.
In recent times the NSW Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water (DCEEW) has put out plans that suggest lowering of the Calmundi and Banarway weirs in the Walgett Shire and a similar lowering of the Louth Weir in Bourke Shire.
General Manager of Walgett Shire Council, Megan Dixon said the council’s stance on the government’s proposed changes to the weirs was clear.
“Previously council did not have a formal position on the issue, and I won’t act without a resolution,” Ms Dixon said.
“As such, I have now put in a report to council, and we will send a letter to the NSW Water Minister.”
Ms Dixon said Walgett Shire Council were advised by the DCCEEW that departmental staff are going back to ‘the drawing board’ regarding plans for local weirs, but council still felt their concerns should be clear. […]
