A week to the day of the freak storm event that devastated Carinda, Walgett Shire Council hosted a community BBQ at the Carinda Pub on Sunday (24 November), to give the community an opportunity to come together.

Megan Dixon, General Manager of Walgett Shire Council said that it was important that the community know that Council was here to support them through what will be a long road to recovery.

“The community of Carinda has shown tremendous courage and resilience over the past week,” Ms Dixon said.

“Watching them work together and support each other has shown just how special living in the outback can be.”

“We had some constructive discussions around what has been done so far, and what needs to happen in the weeks, and months, ahead.”

“The SES and NSW Fire & Rescue have been on the ground all week, along with council staff and volunteers from across the Shire,”

“The recovery has now been handed over to the NSW Reconstruction Authority, who have set up a Recovery Assistance Point which will be open for advice and support.

“The Council will also be working with the NSW Reconstruction Authority to establish a recovery committee to identify and progress recovery actions with the community”.
