It’s a waiting game for local cotton farmers now, as they sit out the last few weeks of the growing season before harvest.

It will be around six weeks before harvesting begins and, in the meantime, all eyes will be on the weather. Like most cotton farmers in western NSW, Brewarrina’s ‘Rumleigh’ manager Jason Morton is quietly confident this year will see a good yield.

“We had an early start to the season with high temperatures early on and an early start around mid-September, and by early October we all got into it,” Jason said.

“Everyone’s just about finished now, with most having crops fully grown. Unfortunately, some are running out of water, which has caused a premature early crop.

“Harvesting for most of us will probably be in the next six to eight weeks. The main thing is we’re trying to keep insect pressures low, so now it’s about insects and maintenance of the crop,” he said. […]
