Trainee journalists get a taste of Bourke and beyond
The Western Herald has been hosting two journalism interns from Sydney.
Layton Holley and Jordan Marsden made the trek up the highway from the big smoke last week to gain on-the-job experience in journalism.
Layton 24, and Jordan 30, are students at Macleay College in Sydney.
Choosing a remote area publication was important for both as Jordan and Layton wanted the opportunity to gain hands-on experience that they may not have been able to gain elsewhere.
Jordan could only spend a week with The Western Herald, due to other commitments in Sydney, but in that time, he was also able get some on-air experience with Outback Radio 2WEB while writing stories for The Western Herald.
Layton said he looks forward to spending the next month working at The Western Herald, and learning writing, photography, and radio skills.
“I have enjoyed my time here so far. Its quite different from where I grew up in suburban Sydney, which helps me, as I plan to become a foreign correspondent in the future,” Layton said.
