Tourism booms as visitors head to the far west

Tourism is continuing to grow in the far west region and is arguably now one of our most important economies.  Joint strategies, government investment and business support are seeing more visitors heading to the Outback – and staying longer.

Bourke, Walgett and Brewarrina councils both report steady upward growth in tourism numbers.

Economic Development Manager for Bourke Shire Council, Mel Milgate said the numbers of tourists visiting Bourke this season had been ‘unbelievable’, with close to 14,000 visitors through the Back of Bourke Exhibition Centre in the past two months.

“It’s been one of our busiest periods – we’ve had bus groups, air tours and festival-goers passing through, but most importantly, we’ve seen plenty of new faces discovering Bourke, the Exhibition Centre and Café, our villages, and the Darling River,” Mel said. […]
