StormCo lends a helping hand in Bourke

Now and then in life, you encounter genuine salt-of-the-earth people; people who work with no thought of profit, who love for the sake of love, and who serve not for gain, but sacrifice.

In StormCo, who last week blessed Bourke by entertaining the youth and helping around people’s gardens, I found such a group of people.

StormCo is a service-based mission trip run out of the Seventh Day Adventist Church for 30 years, and this trip saw 45 young people and mentors from Kempsey and Port Macquarie descend on Bourke to carry out their service.

“Each year, we come to rural communities with no agenda or expectations,” StormCo mentor Marty Thompson said. “We aim to build relationships and serve the community.

“However we can support the community; we’re here to do that.

“This week in Bourke, we have been doing yard work, rubbish runs and running our kid’s club program at the park in the mornings.

“This experience teaches our kids that life isn’t just about getting ahead; life is about growing as a person so you can be a blessing to others.

“And when young people get a taste of that service heart, it transforms their life and grows their character in a way that few other things can, so this service is a blessing to us because we grow from the experience and understand more of what it means to find true happiness and walk in the footsteps of Christ.”

“One of the things I think is excellent about StormCo is that it is building that mentorship between the older and younger generations through serving communities,” StormCo mentor Ed Lopez interceded.

“That is the key – service – especially in these rural, outback communities where there is so much need, so to come in and teach our kids about kindness, as well as filling the needs of the community, we are giving our kids life lessons for the future.
