Rugby Union — New women’s competition for the far west

A new competition will give young women across the far west the chance to display their skills on the football field.

Western Plains Rugby will include a women’s 7s competition for each club in 2021.

Women’s representative Laura Gordon says the women’s competition is a huge opportunity for young athletes to get involved in the sport.

“The decision to include a women’s 7s event was decided at the AGM this month and it’s a massive step up that we are very excited about,” Laura said.

“You don’t have to have any previous experience in rugby union, and women 16 years and over of any ability and any level of fitness are eligible to take part.

“This year we are mainly going to focus on the touch rugby 7s side of things and there is the potential for the girls who want to get involved in the tackle side of the sport to have the option to do the representative 7s side and the Country Championships which are held in Tamworth over the June long weekend.
