The handover of medical services in Bourke to Ochre Health is less than a month away and in preparation, a team of recruitment staff were in Bourke this week, preparing to sell the town to potential medical staff.

Co-founder of Ochre Health Hamish Meldrum led the group of ten recruitment staff on a trip through Bourke, Brewarrina, Walgett, Lightning Ridge, Coonamble and Collarenebri on what he described as a sales tour to promote the west to potential Ochre employees.

“I wanted to show our recruitment staff what Bourke and Brewarrina and all these towns have to offer, what the medical facilities are like and what the lifestyle here offers,” Dr Meldrum said.

“We looked at the Back O’Bourke Exhibition Centre, we toured around some of the high spots of the town with Pat Canty; we went to some of the best spots – we even visited the grave of Fred Hollows and raised a glass of whisky in his honour.

“I wanted to orientate the recruitment staff to the town and show them what Bourke is all about because these are the guys we employ to talk to doctors and locums, and to get them enthusiastic about each of these towns.

“These recruitment people are working in Sydney or Queensland, so in order for them to sell these positions they need to have an appreciation of the towns and an enthusiasm for the opportunities that are here.
