Mayors weet with Premier to address crime

Four mayors met with the NSW Premier this week to raise the issue of crime in local communities. Bourke Mayor Lachlan Ford, Walgett Mayor Jasen Ramien, Brewarrina Mayor Tommy Stanton and Coonamble Mayor Daniel Keady met with Premier Chris Minns on Tuesday. The top-level discussion was prompted by Walgett Mayor Jasen Ramien who expressed frustration at repeated crime in his community. Mayor Ramien urged the Premier to visit the town after two serious incidents at the Walgett pool. Member for Barwon Roy Butler backed up Mayor Ramien’s request, asking in parliament last week if the Premier would address the mayors’ concerns.
In response, Premier Minns invited the mayors and Mr Butler for the round table discussion and said it was important to find out what was happening in these communities. He said although he remained optimistic, he was not convinced the current regime was working for anyone involved.
“It is important that we listen to what is happening on the ground, implement changes that we believe will have a material impact on crime recidivism, ensure that regional communities are safe, and act in the best interests of young offenders,” the Premier said. “Over the past two years the Government, the Minister for Police and Counter-terrorism and the Attorney General have listened to the lived experience of communities.
