Louth kids hit ‘the big smoke’

Students from the Louth Public School hit the big smoke last Friday with an excursion to Bourke.

First on the agenda was a visit to the Percy Hobson mural and a look around the newly developed Percy Hobson Precinct.

The students learnt about the achievements of Percy Hobson – a local Ngemba man who became the first Indigenous athlete to win a gold medal at the Commonwealth Games, then known as the ‘British Empire Games’.

Louth Public School Relieving Principal Leanne Simes said that the school was originally invited to the dedication ceremony at Easter.

“Unfortunately, most of our students were away at that time, so we rescheduled a visit with Councillor Bartley for Friday 5 July,” Mrs Simes said.

“Victor Bartley was amazing in explaining Percy’s achievement in winning the gold medal at the 1962 British Empire and Commonwealth Games. […]
