Students from Lightning Ridge Central School’s Hands-on Learning class recently visited the Wandella Education and Research Precinct as part of an ongoing collaboration with the Lightning Ridge Area Opal Reserve.

The visit is part of a program aimed at connecting students with practical, real-world projects while helping them develop valuable life and work skills.

Damien Flaherty, Wellbeing teacher at Lightning Ridge Central School, coordinates the Hands-on Learning program, which is a national initiative designed to engage young people through practical projects.

“The program is all about giving kids skills that they can then transfer to classroom or work or wherever it may be,” Mr Flaherty said.

“The projects themselves are important, and going out to Wandella is great, because the students love being off-site from the school.”

“Dave, the Reserve Manager has been fantastic, we have a couple of projects out there that we’ll be looking at completing this term including a shade structure and a dance circle.”
