Samuel Pavy, Ashley Harrod and Abbie Lawson are the winners in the 2021 CWA Far Western Group Public Speaking Competition.

Samuel Pavy won the Year 5/6 division with Ashley Harrod coming 2nd, and Abbie Lawson was the Year 3/4 division winner.

The Bourke Evening Branch of CWA hosted the event in their rooms on Tuesday 25th May.

The morning went off very well with only seven participating students. This was disappointing to the organizing committee, but we were rewarded to know that everyone who attended, enjoyed the morning.

We were pleased to welcome many parents to support the students and next year we hope the number of children participating will increase.

This year the students chose one of the following topics, on which to speak: ‘Do we need trees?’, ‘The day the teacher overslept’, ‘Growing your own’ and ‘Hello’.

Each student spoke for two minutes on the topic of their choice from the above list.

Students are given the selection of topics prior to the event, to prepare their speech for the day.

This was the first public speaking event for each of the students, so we look forward to seeing their progress next year.

Judges look for imagination, actions, and eye contact from the students in their delivery.

Winning students from each group will now progress to the Inter Group Level event to be held in Trundle on the 22nd of June. We wish them all well.

A similar event was held at Narromine, the Central Western and Oxley Groups on the same day and winners from these areas will attend the Inter Group Level event also.

A lovely morning tea was enjoyed after the speeches, and Wally Mitchell celebrated his 83rd Birthday on the day.
