FIRST Australia brings youth robotics to regional NSW

Students from schools across the region had the chance to compete in challenges using the world’s most popular toy, when they participated in a new FIRST LEGO League hub last week.
Pupils from Brewarrina Central School, Wanaaring Public School, Brewarrina Christian School, Enngonia Public School, Marra Creek Public School, Bourke Public School and Goodooga Central School, took part in in the event over several days.
FIRST LEGO League is a global program that introduces STEM- science, technology, engineering, and mathematics to young people aged 4-16 through hands-on robotics challenges, problem-solving, and teamwork using LEGO Education SPIKE Prime robotics kits.
The LEGO Foundation Grant is a partnership between FIRST Australia and the LEGO Foundation located in the USA. The grant funds robotics kits and equipment to support participation in the program. Its goal is to provide STEM learning opportunities for students from low socio-economic, regional, remote, and diverse backgrounds.
One of the main slogans of the program is “We don’t use children to build robots. We use robots to build children”.
The slogan was put into action as students were encouraged to discover, explore, and then to challenge one another. The outcome is an understanding of the basics of STEM where students can apply their skills in an exciting competition while building habits of learning, confidence and teamwork skills along the way.
