Ella brings pride and poise as Bourke’s ambassador

The Bourke Show Society’s candidate for the Sydney Royal Young Woman Competition, Ella Henson, had her moment in the spotlight on Saturday, competing against 19 other zone representatives for a spot in the state finals.
Although she wasn’t one of the final three chosen, Ella represented her hometown with poise and pride and is now encouraging other young women to put their hands up and consider representing their community in next year’s competition.
Ella originally hails from Campbelltown, south of Sydney, but moved to Enngonia at the beginning of 2022 to take up a governess role. She said she immediately fell in love with the outback life and is now proud to represent her chosen hometown of Bourke.
Ella gave up the governess job and moved into Bourke late last year and is now a Student Learning Support Officer at Bourke Public School and heavily involved in Bourke’s sporting and community life.
She said the weekend zone finals competition, hosted by Orange Show Society, was another lifelong learning opportunity and said although she didn’t come away with a sash, she had gained much more from the experience.
“My first interview was during the lunch with the other girls, when the judges came to each table and asked us questions, which was a bit nerve-wracking, but I think went okay,” Ella said.
“Then on Saturday night we had the presentation at the Orange Ex-Servicemen’s Club when we were interviewed on stage.
“We were asked questions about ourselves, what we do in the community, where we see ourselves in five years’ time and how we contribute to the Show Society.
“During the interviews I talked about my involvement with the Bourke Ewes and my experience as a governess and then we heard from a previous runner-up who explained what was to come and what she gained from the experience.
“I also had a lot of support from last year’s Bourke showgirl, Lilly Hand, who has been amazing and also from the Show committee president, Grace Ridge. […]
