Deadly week of celebration at Walgett

From the rhythm of traditional dance at the opening ceremony to the applause that greeted this year’s NAIDOC Award recipients, Walgett Shire celebrated culture, community and achievement throughout NAIDOC Week 2026, embracing the milestone theme 50 Years of Deadly.

The celebrations began with a community gathering reflecting on five decades of NAIDOC while looking ahead to the next generation of leaders. The opening ceremony featured a heartfelt Welcome to Country by Dr Aunty Faye Green alongside Junior AECG members Richard Dennis and Bianca Henry, before Councillor Jane Keir officially welcomed guests on behalf of Mayor Jasen Ramien.

Powerful performances by Milan Dhiiyaan dancers Yiri, Guurramali, Fleur and Locky highlighted the strength and richness of Aboriginal culture before the official flag raising ceremony, led by Gary Trindall, Dr Aunty Faye Green, Victor Murray and Noreen Kennedy. Community members then gathered to cut the NAIDOC cake before sharing lunch, activities and fellowship at the Walgett RSL Hall.

The week concluded with the renewed Walgett Shire NAIDOC Week Awards, where community members, families and organisations gathered to recognise those whose leadership, dedication and cultural pride continue to strengthen communities across the shire. […]
