After an extensive recruitment process, local Bre man David Kirby has been appointed as the new General Manager of the Brewarrina Shire Council.

Brewarrina’s Mayor, Vivian Slack-Smith announced Mr Kirby’s appointment as the new General Manager at a meeting of the Brewarrina Shire Council last Friday.

“We chose David because, out of the three people we interviewed after shortlisting, we thought he was the best candidate for the role,” Councillor Slack-Smith said.

“David is a local boy and has a lot of passion for the community and the town; he has family here, and when he started working in council, he was the youngest manager we’d ever had.

“He has a great understanding of local government and the community, which makes him a natural fit for the role,” she said.

“I am really looking forward to working with David and I think he will do nothing but good for this community.”

Mr Kirby, a born and bred indigenous man from Brewarrina, described his appointment as one of the proudest moments of his life.

“This is something that I have aspired to achieve both personally and professionally for a long, long time,” Mr Kirby said.

“I have great pride in this Brewarrina community and in being able to see things progress in this community and being a part of it. It is a great honour.

After a short conversation with him, you can tell how passionate David is about his little hometown.

His first taste of local government came with his appointment as Utilities Manager in 2009, and since then, he has been involved in the community in many volunteering capacities.

Mr Kirby has filled the role of Acting General Manager of Brewarrina Council since Jeff Sowiak resigned in March of this year.
