The Border Regional Organisation of Councils (BROC) will convene in Bourke both today and tomorrow (Friday 20 June), bringing together representatives from councils from the border regions of NSW and Queensland to address key issues impacting these communities.

The Border Regional Organisation of Councils is a collaboration of councils straddling both sides of the NSW-Queensland border, comprising the shire councils of Bourke, Brewarrina, Gwydir, Inverell, Moree Plains, Tenterfield and Walgett in NSW and Balonne, Bulloo, Goondiwindi, Paroo and Southern Downs in Queensland. The group meets quarterly, rotating meeting locations amongst its member councils.

“We generally meet at a different member council area throughout the year, and it’s now Bourke’s turn to host a meeting,” said Leonie Brown, General Manager of Bourke Shire Council. “It’s always good that we can meet up and talk about cross border issues.”

The Border Regional Organisation of Councils focus is on four strategic priorities: economic development, liveability within the shires, infrastructure, and disaster management.

“These strategic priorities comprise common issues for all our councils, but they can become particularly complicated when you’re dealing with different systems across a border,” Mrs Brown said. […]
