Bourke students look to the future
Bourke High School’s Careers and Community Expo last week was a resounding success, with Bourke’s business community and service organisations taking part and more than 80 students making the most of the event.
The Expo was the day following Cobar High School so that services and employment groups could do a western loop and attend both events back-to-back in the one trip.
Three schools attended on Wednesday 7th September – Bourke High School, Bourke Public School and Koinonia Christian School - and Careers Adviser Anna McCorkle said it gave Bourke’s young people the chance to look at the opportunities available to them as they transitioned from school into the world of work.
“As well as the local business community, the event was supported by a host of service and support organisations, including Apprenticeship Support Australia, which supports young people signing up for apprenticeships and liaises with Training Services NSW providing contacts for trainees,” Mrs McCorkle said.
“We also had representatives from TAFE NSW and Defence Force Recruiting who do a wonderful job, outlining the possibilities open to young people joining the various areas of the Defence Forces.
“There are several Bourke people who have joined or are currently in the Australian Defence Forces and it is something our community holds in high regard, so it was great that they come regularly to our school and keep students informed of what’s possible as a career path.
